The Opening Day of the ‘Sheffield & Hallamshire Lawn Tennis Club’ took place on 7th May 1887 with various tournaments starting at 2pm, none of which were completed because there were so many entrants. There were also around 150 spectators enjoying both the tennis and the band of the Hallamshire Rifles whose performance included a specially composed euphonium solo.
Our celebrations and competitions will also start at 2pm and will end with a band late into the evening. Special events include the renaming of Court 1 as 'The Roger Taylor Court', an exhibition match featuring Roger Taylor (2 time US Open doubles winner and 3 times Wimbledon singles semi-finalist during the early 70's) and an evening with Roger later on in the bar giving an insight into the early days of the professional tour with the likes of Laver, Newcombe, Nastase and the young Bjorn Borg. There will be a second exhibition match featuring Wimbledon doubles winner Jonny Marray.
All members, members friends and ex members are welcome and there will be a BBQ on the terrace late afternoon.
During the festivities we shall be raising money for the Sheffield Hospitals Trust which is run by Hallamshire member Dr Andy Chantry who was closely involved in the bone marrow transplant treatment of another Hallamshire member, Mark Ritson. To help boost the fundraising on the day Dr Andy is bringing down his band The Zeroes for a raucous performance starting at 8pm. If you like the Clash, Elvis Costello, Eddie & The Hotrods Dr Feelgood etc you're going to think it's 1977 all over again!
