RFC AIR RALLY June 20, 2015
1. Details
This is a flight-planning and spotting exercise. It involves solving a number of clues on the ground as to the route to be flown. This typically takes about 30 minutes and is a bit like doing a cryptic crossword with an Ottawa VTA.
Once the route is worked out, the pilot estimates the time it will take to fly it (using nothing but an E6B, ruler, protractor, pencil and an estimate of the upper winds).
Flying needs two or more people: the pilot and one or more observers. The pilot is responsible for flying the route safely (about 45 minutes in a C172) while the observer(s) answers questions based on a number of photographs taken from the route.
Points are gained by the accuracy of the route calculation, the accuracy of the time estimate for flying and the accuracy with which the in-air questions are answered. The team with the most points wins this year's trophy!
2. Equipment.
Teams will need an Ottawa VTA. The club will provide rulers and protractors for those pilots more used to flight planning on an iPad. GPS must not be used in the air --- an honour system.
3. Logistics.
Teams must sign in at RFC between 10:00 and 12:00 and the course must be flown between 10:30 and 15:00. Cost is $20 per aircraft.
The winners will be announced at the BBQ (16:00 hrs). Prizes to be awarded.
We have reserved two aircraft for the Air Rally. Email [email protected] if you would like to reserve a booking on one of the aircraft?
Have fun!
