A composer, sound designer, DJ, physicist, and founder of ONO Records (sublabels ONOMAR, ONOBOTS), Jan Pienkowski writes and performs music reflecting his diverse background. From his Electroacoustic training and love of World Music, Classical and Jazz comes a mixture of acoustic spaces and a diverse palette of musical themes. His theatre, film and dance experience bring a flair for the dramatic, while Jan’s affection for House, Techno and Dub keeps his productions and DJ/Live sets full of twisting turns and floor shaking grooves.
Jan began his music journey playing guitar and keyboards in various rock bands and as a music director in theatre, but studying Electroacoustic Music (and Physics) at Concordia University really turned his head toward electronic music and later DJing. After two years of working as a Physicist he decided to pursue his passion for music full time. In the spring of 2002, he entered and won the Global Underground Message Board DJ Contest with his “It Began In Africa” mix, showing his vinyl mixing skills as well as featuring a blend of African, Latin, and Arabic percussion underpinned by house and techno grooves. As a result, Jan was featured as Artist Of The Week on Proton Radio in New York, Clubland Underground and 92.7&5 FM in Chicago and began having regular appearances in clubs back in Montreal.
Since then Jan has had well over 1000 DJ and LIVE performances under his belt spanning North America, Europe and Asia. He is continually searching for new ways to push the boundaries of how music is played and how it is received, whether it is at the beach, the club, in multichannel audio and video environments, or in the good old underground loft party. He has played along side a long list of international and local artists including Anthony Rother, Pele & Shawncey, Akufen, Saro Carrasi, Vincent Abbo, Mateo Murphy, Pheek, Stefny Winter, MAUS, Deepchild, Vincent Lemieux, Miguel Graca, Sixtoo, Dandi Wind, and many many others, as well as playing at festivals such as SONAR OFF, Mutek, Elektra, Black & Blue, MEG, Quebec 400, Divers/Cité, Fantasia Film Festival, FNC, Montreal and Toronto’s Nuit Blanche, and many many more.
Jan’s productions have been featured on compilations with artists such as Misstress Barbara, LSG, Max Graham, Ian Pooley, Chromeo, Nuclear Ramjet, Mike Shannon, Mateo Murphy, Pheek and many others. On his own labels ONO Records and ONOBOTS he has released four EPs and a full length album, while his third label ONOMAR, featuring artists and parties in Barcelona and Montreal, is starting it's releases this summer. Jan also has remixes out on Monsieur Musique, Soloman's Forest Records, with a slo-mo house number coming out this summer for Ellroy on Tiny Lamp Music.
As a resident at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT), a former research assistant in acoustics at the École de technologie supérieure (ETS), and a member of the British Council's Cultural Leadership International Programme (CLI), Jan has been involved in the development of immersive multichannel audio and video full dome shows, helping in the research of innovative headphone and hearing protection designs as well as developing links between artistic communities around the world. He has also been busy writing music for film (recently finishing a 3D stereoscopic short film with Kid Koala for the Canadian National Film Board), dance, audio-video installations, as well as video games.
